Hi, Listeer!

Let me be real with you—since 2019, life has felt like one long rollercoaster ride, and not always fun. It’s like the universe decided to try me at every turn. Between managing studies, navigating personal setbacks, and trying to shoulder everything as an independent first daughter and multipotentialities, I’ve found myself knocked down more times than I care to admit. And then, 2020 – 2022 hit like a wrecking ball. Plans? Shattered. Finances? Wobbly. Mental health? Let’s not even go there.

I moved back in with my parents, which, let me tell you, wasn’t easy for someone craving independence. That weird combo of frustration, boredom, and helplessness hit me hard. And if you’ve ever found yourself trapped in a cycle of endless free time with no direction, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. I’ve had to learn how to keep busy to avoid boredom and keep my mental health in check.

So, if you’re like me—someone who gets bored easily and needs to stay active or else unhealthy thoughts start creeping in—this list is for you. I’m sharing 15 tried-and-tested things to do when boredom strikes. These activities kept me sane, and I hope they do the same for you.

1. Brainstorm Ideas and Dump Them on Paper

Do you ever feel like your brain is a cluttered attic full of random ideas? That’s me, constantly thinking about blog topics, projects, or things I want to explore. When I get bored, I grab a notebook (or open a note on my phone) and dump everything out. Some ideas are brilliant, others are…well, let’s just say they’ll never see the light of day. But it’s all part of the process. There’s something incredibly satisfying about getting your thoughts out of your head and onto paper.

2. Listen to Podcasts That Inspire

Podcasts are one of the best things I discovered during the pandemic. It feels like an intimate conversation with people who understand your struggles or offer new insights. My favourites include Lavendaire Lifestyle, Too Tired To Be Crazy, Queen Raffy Space, and The Calm Down Podcast. These shows helped me feel connected, even on the loneliest days. I love how podcasts can shift your mindset in 20 minutes—whether you’re learning something new or laughing at someone’s hilarious take on life.

3. Get lost in Pinterest for a Creative Boost

When boredom strikes, Pinterest becomes my playground. You can find everything there—home decor ideas, productivity hacks, new recipes, and even journaling prompts. It’s like the internet’s mood board, and it always gets me inspired. I usually end up pinning way more than I’ll ever use, but who cares? Browsing Pinterest makes me feel like I’m planning a life I haven’t even lived yet, and that’s oddly comforting. 4. Support Fellow Bloggers by Reading Their Posts

I’ll admit, there are times I struggle to find inspiration for my writing. That’s when I turn to other bloggers. Reading their posts not only helps me support fellow creators but also sparks new ideas for my content. Sometimes, just seeing how others share their thoughts encourages me to write from a fresh perspective.

5. Get Serious About Time Blocking

A couple of years ago, I started using Google Calendar for time blocking, and it changed my life. Time blocking is when you divide your day into specific chunks for tasks, and let me tell you, it’s a game-changer. It helps me stay on track, even when I feel unmotivated. I’m not always perfect at sticking to my schedule, but the structure keeps me grounded. If you’re a bit scattered like me, give it a try—you might love it.

6. Clear Out Your Inbox (Yes, Really!)

I know, I know—no one enjoys sorting through emails. But when I have nothing better to do, it’s the perfect time to clean up my inbox. Responding to messages, deleting junk, and organizing labels gives me a weird sense of accomplishment. It’s one of those small tasks that instantly make me feel more in control.

7. Learn New Email Hacks

YouTube is full of useful hacks, and email hacks are my latest obsession. For example, did you know you can set up filters and labels to automatically sort your emails? Life-changing! Little tricks like these make managing emails less painful and more efficient.

8. Read a Book, Even If It’s Just a Few Pages

I used to pressure myself to finish books quickly, but now I just focus on reading a little every day. Whether it’s a novel, a self-help book, or even a comic, reading helps me escape reality for a bit. Don’t feel embarrassed about what you’re reading—just enjoy the process.

9. Journal Your Thoughts and Feelings

Journaling has become my go-to activity whenever I feel overwhelmed. Sometimes I write about my day, sometimes I jot down affirmations or goals, and other times I just doodle nonsense. The key is not to overthink it—just let the pen flow. Journaling helps me process emotions I didn’t even realize I had.

10. Take a Walk and Breathe

There’s something magical about taking a walk. Whether it’s around the block or through a park, being outside helps me clear my mind. I use walks as brainstorming sessions or just a chance to breathe and appreciate the little things. Plus, moving your body feels great, especially after sitting all day.

11. Have a Mini Photo Shoot

Photography is one of those hobbies that makes you see the world differently. I love taking random photos—whether it’s everyday objects, scenery, or a little selfie session. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Sometimes the most random photos turn out to be the most meaningful.

12. Move Your Body—Even If It’s Just Stretching

I won’t lie—I’m not always in the mood for intense workouts. But even a quick yoga session or some light stretching makes me feel better. Moving your body is a great way to release tension and improve your mood. And honestly, some days that’s all I need.

13. Pamper Yourself with a Relaxing Bath

When life gets overwhelming, I indulge in a long bath. I add a few drops of essential oils, play soft music, and let the world melt away for a bit. Self-care isn’t just a buzzword—it’s essential.

14. Organize Your Space for a Fresh Start

I don’t know about you, but I can’t function in a cluttered space. Whenever I feel stuck, I tidy up my workspace or rearrange my room. It’s amazing how a clean environment can spark new ideas and lift your mood.

15. Watch That Show You’ve Been Saving

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is binge-watch a show without guilt. There’s no shame in taking a break and enjoying some entertainment. Watch an episode, get lost in the story, and relax.
